Music on the Mountain: Chuck Wagon and the Wheelchairs

Posted on | May 26, 2010 | No Comments

LAVA Music is back in 2010 with another series of free concerts called  Music on the Mountain. This concert stars Chuck Wagon & the Wheelchairs. I’m told he is just terrific–lots of fun. This band put the swing into country music back in the late 70’s and early 80’s, Chuck will be up on Mt. Lemmon with some old wheels and some new friends. Chuck’s special guest this week will be Gary Alan Durrenberger. About as country as they come, Gary’s early musical influences included the Central Texas dance halls, honky-tonks, and juke boxes of the old country stores around his family’s farm near Giddings, Texas.

We went to a couple of concerts last year and had a blast. It’s nice and cool up there. What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon?

Take the family! Also . . . please take a lawn chair.

A note or two: there are lovely, clean restrooms in back of the community center.

Parking for the concerts in Summerhaven is becoming a challenge.  Carpool if you can and arrive as early as possible.   There are usually plenty of parking spaces near the festival area before 11 am, but if you arrive much later than noon, you may be in for quite a walk.

  • Parking is allowed along the side of the road in Summerhaven in places marked “No parking on pavement”.  Just make sure you are off of the pavement.  No parking is allowed in places marked “No parking at any time”.  Parking is not allowed along the highway outside of Summerhaven, and the Forest Service issues tickets to those who park there.
  • And please be respectful of local businesses and only park in their lots while you are shopping or eating in their shops.
  • Please don’t block private driveways (hint: the driveway just beyond the stage is a private driveway).
  • If you come up on a motorcycle, please buddy up and share a parking space with other riders.
  • Be sure to bring a lawn chair, sun screen, and cash for drinks, food, 50/50 tickets, tips for the opening acts, shopping at the local merchants, etc.
  • Shade canopies are allowed for those who prefer to spread out instead of sitting under the tent.  Just be respectful of others and allow plenty of room to get by.
  • No outside drinks are allowed.  Your food and drink purchases support the musicians and other costs of the concerts.  Thank you for supporting this great event!
  • Where: LAVA concerts at Summerhaven Outdoor Venue, 12901 N. Sabino Canyon Parkway, just beyond the community center.
  • When: Sunday May 30, 2010, from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  • How much: FREE admission . . . but please consider buying some food and drinks as that is how the bands are paid.
